The following was taken from the Yorkshire Regiment website

Killed in action 28 Aug 1918 aged 30. Husband of Mary Ann Ness of Bridge St, Yarm. He had been born in Yarm and was living there when he enlisted in Darlington in Aug 1914. Warlencourt Brit Cem, France

Yarm1914 believe that William was was born in 1887 to Joseph and Mary Ann Ness who were living in Meeks Yard in Yarm. His parents, both from Yarm had married in 1882. His mother Mary Ann Coates lived with her grandmother Elizabeth Mudd in Bridge Street and married when she was 18. Living in the house in 1891 were his father aged 40, Mother aged 27 elder brother Johnathan Henry aged 8 who also signed up, brothers William 6 and Thomas 3 and sister Lily aged 4. By 1901 his father had died in 1897 and the family moved to Bridge Street. They had been joined by Emily born in 1892 and Alfred 1894. By 1911 his brother Thomas had married and was living in Oxburn farm working as a gardner. He signed up in 1915 and joined the East Yorkshire Regiment number 28279.
